Regular maintenance of your hardwood floors involves little more than sweeping with a soft bristle broom, or vacuuming with a soft floor attachment. You also should clean your floors periodically with a little vinegar and water or a professional wood floor cleaning product. Do not wet-mop a wood floor. Standing water can dull the finish, damage the wood and leave a discoloring residue. Always squeeze most of the water out of your mop before cleaning the floor.
Newly Finished Floors
If your floor has just been installed or refinished and coated with polyurethane, you should wait about a month before laying down rugs or sliding furniture. Polyurethane cures to its maximum hardness in approximately one month.
Use
throw rugs both inside and outside doorways to help prevent grit, dirt and other
debris from being tracked onto your wood floors. Wipe
up spills immediately with a slightly dampened towel. Avoid
walking on your wood floors with cleats, sports shoes and high
heels.
